Blood, sweat and dirt...

"I perhaps owe having become a painter to flowers."-- Claude Monet

I have been so busy in the yard I haven't gotten much else done. I'm so proud of my new flower garden (mostly perennials) that I thought I would share a few pictures. My wonderful husband bought me a weeping redbud that is in the corner of the boomerang shape. I can't wait to see it bloom next spring!

This was the garden half way finished. I wish I had taken a before photo. When we moved in nearly 2 years ago there was an oval garden in the back that was entirely over grown and a butterfly bush that had a lot of dead wood that I cut off and put a large saucer in for a bird bath. This year I enlarged the space around the butterfly bush and connected the two beds in a large boomerang shape.

Here's the finished garden. I have a lot of plants in there that will grow tall and spread such as shasta daisies, lupine, black eyed susan, yarrow, coneflower, dianthus, salvia & baby's breath.
Also planted a knock out rose, two blueberry bushes, glads, spirea, lady's mantle coral bells, scotch broom, meadow rue, borgae, obedient plant, sunflowers, spiderwort, morning glory, geranium, portulaca, foxglove and more!

Veggie garden is getting big. Just added a small patch behind it for cantaloupe and watermelon. Instead of bamboo poles for tomato teepees, I thought I would try using large branches.

Guess who's going eating lots of salad this week? I have three varieties, like this romaine, to choose from. My favorite is red sails but the black seeded simpson is ready too!

One more gorilla photo from last Monday! Thanks for all the comments. I'm sorry if I'm not able to always comment back but I do appreciate hearing from other bloggers.

Your flower garden is going to be
so beautiful. You put in all my favorites too. I know there is a lot of work to gardening, its never ending too.
That gorilla looks unreal. I decide that after seeing all these great pix I'm gonna take a photography class at the local college.

Oh Jen,
That is beautiful...Cant wait to see how it grows. I absolutely love the gorilla picture...He seems absorbed in contemplation or sad with his reality. NPs hun on not always posting responses or on others pages...BWO..blog without obligation..should never be a chore.

Smiles,
Sonia ;)

LOVE the garden. I have garden envy--once again, the small city garden is not NEARLY as large or fun!

Wow Jen, the garden is looking great! I'm in the same boat the last couple weeks - doing so much work outside I haven't had as much time for art as I'd like. Ah well, soon it will be done and we'll have gorgeous yards to enjoy all summer long!

Your gorilla photos are incredible! I can't go into the ape area of our zoo... I get too sad.

I really like the big branches as trellis. Very cool! Reminds me of some big branches, painted bright primary colors, that decorated the far wall of a huge dahlia bed at the Mendocino Botanical Gardens. Really eye-catching painted red, blue, etc. Your gorilla pics are really profound and I enjoy them a lot. Have you painted a gorilla? You catch something so soulful about them. Happy blogging! Bonnie

Oh hon - I'm so green - it's lovely!! You have been working hard girl!!!
The iris - one of my favorites! A friend bartered with me for a load of unusual iris this spring - can't wait till they bloom to see what colors and sizes they are!!
I think the older I get the more I love perennials - they pop up every spring and don't need nearly the care of my veggie garden!!
Have fun in the sun!!
Blessings, Sarah

the garden looks great! the boomerang shapes works much better then what was there before.

we are going to use large branches for stakes too. with the wind we have been having we need to use something thicker then the stakes you can get from the store so the plants have support.

Great job! It's going to be so beautiful all filled in (it already looks wonderful to me). Hope to see more photos as the plants grow up. And can you send me some of that lettuce? :-)

Your garden is really coming along. We've had so many cool nights here my squash is the only thing really moving. I'm a lot like you, I love gardening and it fulfils my need to be creative in the spring and summer and it's hard to get into the studio to paint.
