Smokin' Good Times

Just got back from a 5 day trip to Las Vegas with my Mom and sisters to visit our Grandmother for her 80th birthday. Since she's my last grandparent I felt it was important to spend some time with her. I know now where I get my spunkiness that's for sure. Most of the time she kept right up with us! As one of her birthday cards said, '80 is the new 60!'. Maybe it's right.

The lights of Freemont Street are so much fun. The last few times I was here, I didn't have the greatest camera to capture them properly.
The overhead light show was awesome with psychedelic images and 60's music.

I love the old neon that they are restoring and displaying around downtown.

Of course we had to make a trip to Pawn Stars! I love that show. Saw a lot of the pieces that were on the show but not the owners.

Storm Troopers are patrolling the streets for missing droids.

"The night before I left Las Vegas I walked out in the desert to look at the moon. There was a jeweled city on the horizon, spires rising in the night, but the jewels were diadems of electric and the spires were the neon of signs ten stories high."
 ~Norman Mailer

Opulence in every window.

All the casinos had displays celebrating the Year of the Rabbit.
This one was at the Wynn.

I even found Elvis... or maybe his ghost?

Street performers abound.
I snuck a photo of the two Michael's.

Everything is larger than life!

Even in the day, the old neon signs look cool!

We also went to Mount Charleston, Red Rock Canyon, Bonnie Springs Ranch, Hoover Dam and boating on Lake Mead!
More photos to come!

Great pictures. I spent part of my childhood growing up in Vegas and we used to drive down to see the big Cowboy for fun some nights--they'd just load us kids in the car and go. It's changed a lot since then, of course.

That photo of the stormtrooper was so fabulous and bizarre at the same time. :)
I went to Vegas with the family when I was 13 so...not much to remember except the hotel's theme park, but I enjoyed the visit through your photos!
And happy birthday to Grandma!

Happy Birthday, Grammy!!

I don't know, I don't think Vegas is the place for me. It looks all spiffy and flashy, but I'm not sure I'd fit in. Did you see any shows or anything?? That would interest me. Oh--and the Pawn Stars!

Hi Jennifer,

Happy Birthday to your grandma! :)

Thanks for sharing all these great photos. I wrote my MA thesis about the history and development of an entertainment culture in Las Vegas, so, naturally, I left a part of my heart in that city. :)

You are an active blogger, so I would love to invite you to my One World One Heart giveaway. It's still time to hop over to my blog and leave a comment to win a beaded necklace . Comments will be accepted until February 17th (please think of the time difference).

Hugs,
Birgit

I've never been to Vegas--I love that you've captured so many things that I've never seen before (the "inside view," in a way). I like Pawn Stars, too--I don't have cable, but watch it over at my Dad's house sometimes. That and American Pickers--almost makes me want to subscribe :)

Oh, if you get a moment, do go to the Bellagio ... you'll be astounded by their floral display this year! Plus you'll get to see Chihuly's glass flowers blooming on the ceiling :)

So glad the good weather held out for you!
*hugs*
