Weekend

Driving home a back way from Longwood Gardens today,
we saw this amazing field of sunflowers on Rte. 926. I think it's Liondale Farm.
Kinda takes your breath away!

We still have a hummingbird or two hanging around the feeders.

I love her green eyes.

Longwood photos to come soon!

Yes, I have more hummingbird photos...

I'm sorry, I'm completely addicted to taking hummingbird photos.
They'll be gone soon and I will miss them so much.
Even though they fight each other.
Even though they fight the other birds!
Even though they have been terrorizing the butterflies.
I love my little hummies.

Seems like I mostly have young males here now.
They have dark spots under their neck that will turn ruby red.

This little guy was preening himself after the hurricane passed.
Doesn't he look funny all puffed out?

And my little Zoe had her first day of kindergarten today.
Soon everyone will be growing up and leaving the nest.

My Mother's Sunflowers

Visiting my Mom yesterday, I found myself lost in the rows of sunny, yellow, sunflowers.
The sound of 50+ chirping goldfinches was hypnotizing.

I find the pattern in the sunflower above mesmerizing!
My eyes feel goofy if I look at it intensely for a few seconds. Like one of those Magic Eye books, it seems like I should see an image pop out.

Look who came out to greet me!

Dog Sitting and Zombie Cardinal

We are watching our friend's dog, Brooklyn, for 2 nights.
He made such a sad face right after they left
but cheered up after about 20 minutes.
He loves to sit in the yard with me and watch the hummingbirds.

We saw this little hummer this morning.

I don't know how appropriate it is to let a dog drink out of the bird bath but it's relatively clean and I'm sure dogs have lapped up far worse.

Squirrel!

Some photos of the mare I part lease, Rosie.
She's a sweetheart!

And here's that zombie cardinal I promised. I think it may be mites.
He gets this way every summer, his wife looks completely normal.
Poor guy, he'll grow it back (I hope).

Hummer Land

I've been a long time follower of Sandy Sandy's blog and recently I saw that that she was letting hummingbird enthusiasts come out and photograph her little birds. Well, you can believe I jumped at the chance! Sandy and her husband Jerry were wonderful hosts sharing their home with me for the weekend. There were so many animals- hummingbirds, deer, turkeys, wild birds, horses, and even a darling chipmunk. I truly believe I have made a friend for life and feel like I have met a very kindred spirit. Please check out Sandy's website as well when you get the chance, she is an amazing artist!

So here are a few of my favorite hummingbird photos from 'Hummer Land'. Please click on each photo for a larger view, some of the details are amazing!
